Palm Kernel Expeller (PKE) is a by-product of palm oil extraction, obtained from the mechanical pressing or solvent extraction of palm kernels. It is commonly used as a feed ingredient for livestock, particularly in the diets of ruminants such as cattle, sheep, and goats. PKE is rich in fiber, moderate in protein, and contains residual oil, making it an energy-dense feed supplement. Its high fiber content supports rumen function, while its nutrient profile complements other feed ingredients in balanced diets.
Feed-grade PKE is typically brownish in colour, granular in texture, and has a slightly nutty aroma. While it is highly valued for its cost-effectiveness and availability, its use is generally limited to ruminants, as its high fiber content makes it less suitable for poultry. Quality standards for feed-grade PKE ensure it is free from contaminants and meets nutritional requirements for animal feed.
