Poultry by-product meal (PBM) is a high-protein ingredient widely used in animal feed, particularly for pet food and livestock diets. It is derived from rendered parts of poultry that are not typically consumed by humans. PBM is valued for its rich protein content and essential amino acids, making it a cost-effective source of nutrition. It also provides energy, vitamins, and minerals like calcium and phosphorus.
The production process involves grinding the raw materials, cooking them at high temperatures to remove moisture and fat, and processing them into a fine, dry meal. Common applications include poultry feed, pet food, aquaculture diets. The quality and nutritional value of PBM can vary depending on the raw materials and rendering process, with high-quality PBM excluding feathers, blood, and non-poultry materials to enhance digestibility and nutrient density. PBM is golden to medium brown in colour with a fresh poultry odour.
